With the first pick in the 2008 NFL draft…

the Miami Dolphins select Jake Long, T, University of Michigan. No position is a lock to be productive but tackles, running backs and defensive linemen are usually the best bet to make an immediate impact. Long is the first offensive linemen to be taken first since Orlando Pace was the first pick by the St. Louis Rams in 1997. Now that the first pick has been decided we get to watch or listen to the endless speculation on what the Rams are going to do with the 2nd pick. I am also interested in how much time goes off the Dolphins clock when the draft starts on Saturday. I am sure ESPN will want at least five minutes to pass so the roundtable can discuss the pros and cons of the pick and give Chris Berman (I could do a whole post on his tired shtick) enough time to come up with another stupid nickname.

There are never any sure things but Long maybe the best player at the #1 spot. The NFL draft has gone from team needs to taking the best player because of the money these “fools” are making. All too often teams pass up players because of their “value” at the pick rather than whether or not they actually need them. However, there are many exceptions and this draft will be no different. Berman, Kiper, Mortenson, and whoever else they can stick in front of the camara will be talking about athleticism, size and value. Not if the team needs them or not. I will leave you with this: The Titans need a WR and there are many to be drafted, but out of this years’ class, EARL BENNETT will be the best one selected and that’s my 2 cents worth.

BJ, I couldn’t agree with more… How many records did Earl break at Vandy?! Great hands, good speed, and the “it” factor. The Titans would be fools not to take him in the 2nd round…
